Watagan Creek No. 3 Bridge Upgrade

  • Project typeBridge upgrade
  • Project scheduleCommencing 12 June, due to be complete 4 months from the date of commencement

Background

The existing Watagan Creek Road No. 3 Bridge is an old timber bridge that has become significantly worn out over time. Due to its deteriorating condition, a thorough inspection in May 2022 resulted in a 7.5-tonne load limit being imposed to ensure safety. This limitation has affected residents, emergency services, and the transport of goods, highlighting the need for a replacement.

To address this issue, the Council included the bridge replacement in its 2023-24 Operational Plan as part of the Bridge Construction Program. Recognising the heritage significance of the bridge, Council decided to preserve the old structure by constructing a new bridge over it. This approach maintains the historical value while providing modern and safe infrastructure.

The design for the new bridge is complete, and construction is set to begin on 12 June, 2024. The new bridge will remove current restrictions, improving access for residents, facilitating emergency services, and ensuring smooth transport of goods. This project aims to enhance connectivity and safety while respecting the historical importance of the original bridge.

Scope of Works

This project involves the installation of a temporary bridge and access approach roads to maintain connectivity during construction. The project involves building new foundations, abutments, and wingwalls, followed by the construction of the main bridge. Additional works include the installation of guardrails, approach road improvements on both sides, and the addition of street furniture. Finally, the project will conclude with the installation of signs and line markings to ensure safety and proper traffic flow.

Location

The bridge site is located 4.8 km from Great North Road, Laguna along Watagan Creek Road and oriented in a West-East direction as shown below.

Traffic Management

A Traffic Management Plan will be in place for the duration of project. The Plan includes:

  • Installation of temporary access road and bridge adjacent to the existing bridge for diverting the traffic during construction of main bridge.
  • During the course of works a Traffic Management Plan will be in place on the bridge for the safety and awareness of the road users / residents.
  • Council regrets any delay that residents may face due to partial road closures for the safety of road users during high risk works.
