Watagan Creek No. 1 Bridge Replacement

Scope of Works

This project involves replacing the existing timber bridge with a single span concrete bridge structure, with provision for concrete approach slabs to meet current standards. An increase in width will provide dual lane access over the bridge, as per current standards, and transition the road width back to match existing alignment. The deck height will be raised 1.0m to provide a 1 in 2 year flood immunity. The approaches will be raised over a 200m total length to provide flood free access in a 1 in 2 year flood event.

Benefits of Project

Maintenance Benefits:

• Installation of the new concrete bridge will reduce annual maintenance costs by 80%.

Social Benefits:

• The bridge will provide a better level of service and create new opportunities for the community. Though the majority of smaller emergency vehicles (ambulances etc.) can still pass across the bridge, due to the previous load limit of 12T, larger emergency vehicles, such as fire fighting vehicles, which are currently restricted, will be able to access this bridge as an emergency route once project is complete.

Economic Benefits:

• The new bridge structure will provide opportunities for development and growth of existing industries by enabling the route to be used uninterrupted. The wider and stronger bridge will allow residents and farming operations to transport larger, heavier goods. This will facilitate transport efficiencies and enable increased production from businesses serviced by Watagan Creek Bridge.

Safety Improvements:

• The project will increase the bridge from a two narrow lane timber bridge to a two-lane concrete bridge. Users will have new line markings, sealed bridge surface and increased load capacity. Provision for safe pedestrian access over the new bridge.

Location

The bridge site is 270m south east of the Great North Road at Laguna. Map coordinates are 32.9956°S, 151.1322°E.
