Background

The Kurri Kurri Netball Facility Project, located within Booth Park, aims to deliver much-needed upgrades to the park’s sporting infrastructure. The project will enhance local participation in netball, benefit school groups and community organisations, and provide the capacity to host netball tournaments and events in Kurri Kurri.

In May 2021, Cessnock City Council resolved to relocate the Kurri Kurri Netball Courts from Molly Worthington Netball Facility to Booth Park to meet the future needs of netball in the Kurri Kurri Planning Area.

A draft concept plan was developed and placed on public exhibition, and a community meeting was held on 16 June 2022. During this meeting, impacted stakeholders shared concerns about road conditions, parking, traffic, noise, and stormwater drainage issues.

In 2022, as part of the Federal election, a $7.5 million funding commitment was made to Council, enabling the project to progress to detailed designs for the new facility. The concerns raised by residents during the 2022 community meeting have been noted and incorporated into the final design.

Project schedule & updates

Construction works are scheduled to start on 20 January 2025, with estimated completion in December 2025.

April 2025 Update

Significant progress has been made on-site as the project continues to take shape.

Major earthworks are now complete, including the removal of topsoil, cut-to-fill operations, the removal of unsuitable material, importation of certified fill, and proof rolling across all court areas. This has laid a strong foundation for the next stage of works.

Base preparation is now underway for the asphalt court surfaces and carparks, marking a key phase in the development. Stormwater infrastructure is also progressing well, with all pits and pipes installed and the on-site detention (OSD) tank currently being installed following excavation.

Structural works are advancing steadily, with the building piers and columns now excavated and poured. Sewer and water connections have been successfully completed and are now connected to the Hunter Water mains. Electrical trenching for the floodlighting system has also commenced.

In addition, the sandstone retaining walls have been completed, helping to shape and define the layout of the site.

We look forward to sharing further updates as the project continues to progress.
