Background

Wollombi Road is an important east-west Rural Collector Road link connecting Wollombi, Millfield, Paxton and Bellbird to Cessnock.

Historically, Wollombi Road was part of the primary overland route between Sydney and the Hunter Valley, constructed by convict labour between 1826 and 1834. The road has since been realigned in many places and the original surface has been overlaid.

The Wollombi Road Rehabilitation Project aims to improve road user’s safety, access and comfort. Some sections of Wollombi Road have already been rehabilitated (Stages 1 to 6) to comply with contemporary standards and guidelines.

The overall project works include:

  • strengthening and resurfacing of the pavement
  • carriageway widening (where possible)
  • drainage and culvert improvements
  • cut and fill for improved carriage width (as required)
  • line marking and installation of safety barriers and signage to make the road compliant

This project forms part of Council's Operational Plan. You can find it within the Operational Plan with the Project ID RRR 2022 004.
