Less Is More: Food Preserving Workshop

Did you know that homemade canned food can stay fresh in your pantry for years?

Cessnock City Council is pleased to announce a free Introduction to Home Canning and Food Preservation workshop to be held at the Cessnock Youth Centre & Outreach Service (CYCOS) building.

The workshop is part of Council’s Less is More campaign, which seeks to change our relationship with products and encourage us all to reuse, repair, rent, borrow and share rather than always buying new.

The workshop will be hosted by Kirsty Berte and will consist of a presentation and hands-on canning session in which participants will have the opportunity to make preserves using local, seasonal ingredients.

In this particular workshop attendees will be pressure canning carrots and taking part in a demonstration of water bath canning of high acid foods.

Attendees will learn about:

Food safe practices for boiling water bath canning of high acid and acidified foods
Food safe practices for pressure canning of low acid foods including vegetables, meats, seafood, soups and stews
Canning equipment, tools and ingredients
Canning your own or locally sourced seasonal produce to last throughout the year

Registration includes all supplies and participants will take home a jar of their own preserve, a booklet containing everything covered in class, some fabulous recipes to try at home, and access to a private Facebook group for participants of the workshop to continue to receive on-going support and share their endeavours with their newly learnt skills.

The workshop will take place on Saturday 13 May from 2pm-4.30pm.
