Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Cessnock City Council acknowledges that within its local government area boundaries are the Traditional Lands of the Wonnarua people, the Awabakal people and the Darkinjung people. We acknowledge these Aboriginal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our offices and operations are located, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.  We also acknowledge all other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who now live within the Cessnock Local Government Area.

As part of acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage in our area, Council adopted the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan (ACHMP). This plan is a guide to help protect and respect Aboriginal cultural heritage in the Cessnock area.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee

Cessnock City Council is seeking people with skills, experience, knowledge and understanding relevant to local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that want to make a positive contribution to the work of the Cessnock City Council Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee.
