Residents are encouraged to have their say on the Draft Environmental Zoning Framework. The draft framework outlines how Council may apply the environmental zones in the future.

The framework sets out draft criteria and principles to determine which lands will be zoned environmental and recommends draft land uses and objectives for the environmental zones.

Cessnock City Council’s Director of Planning and Environment Peter Mickleson encouraged residents to consider what’s being proposed.

“The framework is a critical planning document for the area to manage development while protecting places in the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA) that are environmentally significant to the community. When adopted it will provide certainty for both landholders and developers as it will ensure the zones are consistently applied.”

The framework is part of the ongoing Environmental Lands Study that is being undertaken to identify lands of high environmental value in the Cessnock LGA. Consultation was carried out last year to assist in developing the framework. Residents were asked their opinions on a variety of topics including their expectations for environmental zones and about the activities and facilities that should be permitted in the zones.

Council has also sought valuable community feedback through the 16 members of the Community Reference Groups, government agencies and key stakeholders.

Residents have the opportunity to view the plans from today until Friday 6 August. To have your say visit Council’s website.
