Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal

It was fantastic to wrap up the end of April with a huge community turnout as we marked the completion of the brand new Neville Tomlinson Regional BMX facility at Carmichael Park. The construction of the new BMX track was delivered alongside other park upgrades, including the addition of new four bay cricket practice nets, a full-size multipurpose court and hit-up/rebound wall, providing regional standard amenities for Bellbird.

The new facility honours local hero and long-serving Bellbird Fire Station Captain Neville Tomlinson, who was instrumental in establishing the original track that became a hub of activity for generations of residents. It was an honour to have members of his family present for the official opening. I look forward to seeing the community come together to enjoy this fantastic new community space.

On the topic of Cessnock’s LGA’s history, this year we celebrate the centenary of the iconic Cessnock School of Arts building, which has been a prominent landmark in the community since its opening in 1924. To honour its rich history, a unique exhibition is on display in the Cessnock library foyer to showcase its many stories, as part of the Australian Heritage Festival. Time is running out to see the thought-provoking Cessnock School of Arts Centenary exhibition, so be sure to get down to the library before it closes on Monday 13 May.

Cessnock City Council is set to invest more than $75 million on roads and other capital works projects across the local government area in the next 12 months. The draft Operational Plan 2024-25, which outlines Council’s priorities for the next financial year, is now on exhibition. The plan continues the increased investment in infrastructure and capital works that has been a feature of the current term of Council, in line with community feedback.

Council has developed a digital map displaying the capital works program, so residents can easily identify planned works in their area. I encourage community members to visit our Together Cessnock page to view the digital map, learn more about the plan and have their say.
