Mayoral Column - 8 February 2023

It was an honour to preside over the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony on January 26th. Celebrating locals who are doing amazing work for our community, and welcoming new citizens to Australia is always a highlight of my role at Cessnock City Council.
A particular story I wish to highlight is of the Community Award recipient Jewell Harrison. At 10 years old, Jewell is a young lady who has dedicated her time and efforts to raise money for much needed cancer research in our community. Holding various events throughout the past year involving schools, local businesses and sporting clubs, she has raised over $20,000 for the Cancer Council.
In honour of her late grandmother, Robyn Northrop, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2019, Jewel and her family created an event and rode their bicycles over 100km during a long weekend in October last year.
It has been wonderful to see the success of the Dolly Parton – Imagination Library, which now has 652 children enrolled onto the program in the LGA. In 2022, 2900 age-appropriate, high-quality, new books were sent to children in our area to build stronger bonds and develop children’s curiosity for discovery and learning.
As the new school year begins, I would like to extend my best wishes to all students, teachers, and families. I would like to encourage students to strive for excellence and make the most of their education. Take advantage of all that your school has to offer and never hesitate to ask for help when needed.
Teachers, your dedication and hard work in guiding our young minds is truly commendable. Your efforts have a deep impact on the future of our community. Lastly, to the families of our students, thank you for your support and encouragement.
I also wanted to encourage residents to take part in the Seniors Festival, which is currently running until the 12 February This year's festival is featuring a wide range of arts, music, heritage, ongoing learning, health, and wellbeing activities with the theme "Celebrate Together."
Cessnock City Council has worked with the Seniors Festival Planning Group, as well as many other community organisations and businesses, to put on this fabulous event. I would like to thank them all for their hard work. You can find out more about the festival and download the program of events on the Council’s website: www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/seniors2023.
