Mayoral Column - 31 May 2023
Published on 31 May 2023
I was recently privileged to host a presentation for the eleven successful recipients of a 2023 Mayoral Scholarship.
A quality education provides the foundation for a successful future. The annual Mayoral Scholarships are an important initiative that support educational pathways for young people in our local government area.
Since becoming Mayor in 2021, I have been pleased to lend my support and participate in the application review and selection process for the program Cessnock City Council has operated since 2002. And I must say, each year I am impressed with the calibre of candidates and applications we receive. This year was no different.
This year we saw students studying a wide variety of subjects receive a scholarship, ranging from Education to Nursing, Paramedicine, Cyber Security, Surveying, Environmental Management and Science, Management and Commerce, Environmental Sustainability, and Mechanical Engineering.
Congratulations to our 2023 Mayoral Scholarship recipients:
- Andrea Pinchen
- Lennox Vasilis
- Nathan Riley
- Ethan Elliott
- Emily Gordon
- Hollie Winter
- Mariah George
- Jesse Knight
- Kellie Drummond
- Benjamin Archer
- Rebecca Nies
The Mayoral Scholarships are made possible only through the generous support of our sponsors. This year’s sponsors are: Belford Land Corporation, East Cessnock Bowling Club, Cessnock City Council, Cessnock Rotary Club, Cessnock Hospitality Group, Hunter Resource Recovery, Rover Coaches, Roche Group, Austar Coal Mine, Dr Kift Nu Smile, and Lioncrest Education.
It was great to get out to the newly completed fitness loop at Chinaman’s Hollow, Weston last week.
Council has done a wonderful job delivering a fully integrated fitness loop featuring a new pathway connecting three fitness stations that are free to use and cater for all levels of fitness and ability. The project was made possible with funding through the NSW Government’s Stronger Countries Community Grants.
I look forward to seeing the community take advantage of these wonderful new facilities over the years to come, as part of a revitalised Maybury Peace Park/Chinaman’s Hollow precinct.
Finally, Council is holding its first Coffee with a Councillor at Huntlee Park on Thursday 1 June at 8.30am. I look forward to speaking with everyone who is able to attend. We’re planning to hold more of these sessions in different areas across the local government area, so keep an eye out for future dates near you.
