Mayoral Column _ Dan Watton

Council recently held its first meeting of the new term. The meeting set the administrative framework of the coming Council term, including membership of internal and external committees, delegations, and meeting schedule. We’re holding a second meeting this month with a more detailed agenda; however, the shorter initial meeting provided an opportunity for new councillors to dip their toes in and experience how council meetings operate, and also to invite special guests to be present as we all took our oaths of office. It was particularly touching to be able to share this experience with my wife and children. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Clr Mitchell Hill on his election as Deputy Mayor. I look forward to working collaboratively with Mitchell over the next 12 months.

In other news, I’m excited to share an important update that will enhance safety, sustainability, and economic empowerment in the Wollombi Valley, as part of our ongoing efforts to deliver positive outcomes right across our local government area. I’m pleased to advise that Council has secured funding from the State Government to complete significant upgrades in Wollombi Village. These vital improvements, including the installation of pathway connections, kerb extensions, and formalised car parking, will ensure safer access for pedestrians in this busy area. This major project would not have been possible without securing $754,000 in grant funding through the Toward Zero Safer Roads Program. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these upgrades will bring.

On the topic of community investment, Council will be hosting an Economic Empowerment Workshop in partnership with The Business Centre, scheduled for October 29-30 at Cessnock Leagues Club. This two-day workshop is designed specifically for young women under 25 who are interested in starting their own businesses. Participants will gain practical skills in areas such as business structures, financial management, and effective marketing strategies. Our community is filled with dedicated and hardworking women who contribute so much to our local economy, and with women making up 55 percent of small business owners in our local area, it is vital that we provide them with the resources and support they need to thrive. Thanks to ClubGrants funding, this workshop is free of charge, and additional support will be available for women facing challenges, including domestic violence and homelessness. I encourage all eligible young women to take advantage of this unique opportunity to transform their business ideas into reality. For registration details, please visit this link.
