Mayoral Column - 21 June 2023
Published on 21 June 2023
Following the tragic bus accident that occurred within our LGA over the long weekend, I want to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those that sadly lost their lives as a result of this incident. My thoughts are also with the first responders, the NSW Health workers, Transport for NSW and Council team members who all provided care and assistance to those involved. To see the overwhelming support offered to those impacted by this tragedy is a testament to our community and residents.
On Tuesday morning Council opened a Community Crisis Centre near the site of the accident at Branxton Community Hall; to connect local residents in need with the support services they require in a single location, such as access to mental health workers and a place to connect with one another.
The community also came together last Thursday evening for a vigil near the crash site, to honour those lost in the crash, support their loved ones and pay tribute to the first responders. At this week’s Council meeting I will be moving a Mayoral Minute to recognise and acknowledge those impacted by the tragedy.
I was pleased to join with local families to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Cessnock Multipurpose Children's Centre this past weekend. Established in 1963, this non-profit, community-based organisation has been providing high-quality and affordable childcare to children in our community. With a strong commitment to excellence and assisting each child to reach their full potential, the centre has been an important part of our community for six decades. As someone who attended the centre myself, and whose children now do, I look forward to witnessing the positive impact the Cessnock Multipurpose Children's Centre will have on the next generation.
Councillor Jurd and I recently had the privilege of attending the 2023 Local Roads Congress on June 5th at NSW Parliament House. This annual event, which was first held in 2005, brings together mayors, councillors, and executives from local councils to address policy issues related to roads and transportation. This year’s discussions focussed on enhancing road infrastructure, improving connectivity, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation systems.
Finally, I’d like to thank Councillor Jackson for representing Cessnock City Council at the National General Assembly of the Australia Local Government Association last week, alongside Council General Manager Ken Liddell. The conference provides an important forum to collaborate with Ministers and other local government representatives and to identify opportunities to design federal programs and policies that support local councils to enhance service delivery and build stronger communities.
