I’m thrilled that Council’s efforts to enhance our region’s transportation infrastructure are gaining momentum after successfully securing $88,000 in funds from the NSW Government’s Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme. This allocation enables us to modernise eleven existing bus stops and construct another two new shelters, to meet current accessibility compliance requirements.

The significant transformation will include installation of tactile ground indicators, enhanced kerbside access, better timetable boards, and new seating, fostering safer and more inclusive transit options for our community. The distinctive blue bus shelters dotting our region serve as tangible markers of our commitment to progress, and I’m sure residents agree that they look fantastic too!

On the topic of restoration and renewal in our community, I’m delighted that the draft Braxton Oval Masterplan is now on public exhibition, providing residents the opportunity to have their say on the plans for the local facility. Council has taken into consideration the community requests to explore options to increase visitation to Branxton and its RV park, while bearing in mind the site flooding impact and risks associated with grass fires, alongside the requirements of NSW Crown Lands.

I’m excited that the design features of the draft Branxton Oval Masterplan include long vehicle parking locations, short vehicle parking locations for recreation and events, flood resilient picnic locations, formalised access roads and paths, lighting to minimise anti-social behaviour, water and electricity access points, upgraded shower facilities, and a covered stage area for community events.

Branxton Oval is a fondly utilised facility, and Council is committed to raising the standards for both locals and visitors to Branxton. You can view the draft masterplan at Cessnock and Kurri Kurri Libraries, Council’s Administration Building, or by visiting the Together Cessnock page here. As valued community members, we would appreciate your thoughts and insights, and I highly encourage residents to have their say via a survey submission on the website page. Submissions will be accepted until 4pm Monday 17 July 2024.

Furthermore, as part of our ongoing ‘Support Local’ campaign, Council is offering seven passes to Hunter Valley Gardens. Throughout June we are spotlighting the fantastic events hosted in the Greater Cessnock area, celebrating the great venues and businesses that enrich our local culture, and recognising the ongoing behind-the-scenes work that helps to bring our diverse and vibrant events to life!

Between 1 – 30 June, residents are encouraged to acknowledge their favourite events, venues or businesses in the Cessnock LGA through a photo post on social media, tagging them, and using the hashtag #supportlocalcessnock. Seven lucky winners will be randomly selected to receive family or double passes to explore one of our region’s iconic destinations.

For competition terms and conditions and further information, please visit the Advance Greater Cessnock page here.
