Learn how to turn waste into food for gardens at composting workshop
Published on 05 February 2025
Discover how easy it is to reduce organic waste in household garbage bins, and produce ‘black gold’ to feed gardens and support the environment.
Beginners and advanced gardeners alike are welcome at a composting workshop at Cessnock Community Garden between 9am and 12pm on Saturday, 15 March 2025.
The workshop will include a theory element as well as a practical component, with participants building a composting system for the community garden.
Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said composting was an excellent way to practise environmental sustainability around the home.
"This workshop will not only teach you how to reduce the amount of waste your household is putting in the garbage - you will see benefits in the garden too," Clr Watton said.
"I encourage anyone who is interested in looking after our local environment to get involved no matter what level of skill you have, whether you’re an experienced green thumb, or someone with a notorious black thumb – like me!
"Don’t forget to take gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle on the day."
The workshop is free for Cessnock Community Garden Association members. A $5 fee applies to non-members to cover the cost of morning tea and materials provided.
