EOI open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee

Published on 06 December 2024

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people with strong connections to culture and community are being sought to help guide Cessnock City Council’s future.

Expressions of interest are open until 7 February to be part of this term of Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.

The role of the Committee includes advising Council to improve policy, plans, programs and service delivery.

Cessnock City Council Mayor Dan Watton said the group was an important advisory body.

“The advisory committee plays a critical role in encouraging understanding and recognition of Indigenous Australian histories, heritage, and cultures within Council and the community,” said Clr Watton.

“It also oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Action Plan.”

Three councillors and eight community representatives will make up the committee. Clr Mitchell Hill, Clr Sophie Palmowski, and Clr Chris Madden were chosen for the role in October.

To be selected, community representatives must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who:

  • lives in Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA), and/or
  • works or studies in Cessnock LGA, and/or
  • has a strong cultural association with Cessnock LGA.

Expressions of interest close 5pm Friday 7 February 2025.
