In commemoration of ANZAC Day, Cessnock City Library is running two free bus tours of war memorials around the Cessnock Local Government Area.

War memorials are scattered throughout the Cessnock Local Government Area ranging from big, commanding ones in public parks to smaller, hidden ones in community halls.

Over time, Cessnock City Library has compiled a complete inventory of our local war memorials. The two free bus tours follow the successful completion of this project.

The Exploring our Memorials grant comes from the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs (OVA) and was given under the ANZAC Community Grants Program administered by the OVA.

Library Services Co-ordinator, Rose-marie Walters, believes these tours and the completed inventory will bring greater awareness to an important part of our local history.

“Some of these memorials are well-known and others are more hidden,” Rose-marie said.

“Our bus tours will explore the lesser-known ones and the large public structures, both have fascinating stories to tell.”

The bus tours will take place on Friday 14 April and Friday 21 April, and will run from 10.00am – 12.00pm. The buses will depart and return to Bridges Hill Park, Yango Street, Cessnock.

The bus tours will conclude with a morning tea in Bridges Hill Park, which will be catered by the Cessnock Men’s Shed.

Due to the size of the Cessnock Local Government Area, each tour will visit different memorials; one bus will travel south, covering the Cessnock to Wollombi area, the other will travel east and cover the Cessnock to Pelaw Main area.

Participants are able to go on either or both trips as they will be standalone experiences.

Numbers are limited. Bookings are essential.
