Step into the thrilling world of true crime as Kurri Kurri Library welcomes author and journalist Michael Adams for an engaging talk on his latest book: 'They’ll Never Hold Me: The Life and Crimes Of Kevin John Simmonds, Australia’s Most Daring Fugitive'.

The free event, which will explore the thin line between heroism and villainy, will be held between 6pm and 7pm on Thursday, 15 May, 2025.

Simmonds captured the nation’s attention in 1959 as he embarked on a brazen crime spree, resulting in a lengthy prison term.

Just two months into a 15-year sentence in a Sydney gaol, Simmonds made a daring escape and eluded authorities for five weeks in what was – at the time – Australia’s largest armed manhunt. When he was recaptured in the Hunter and taken to Kurri Kurri police station, the townspeople applauded him as an outlaw hero.

Adams unveils the true story and tragic conclusion of Simmonds’ life – a figure who embodied the antihero narrative, eliciting sympathy from the public and the ire of law enforcement.

"Kevin Simmonds is a figure that transcends mere criminal antics; he wrote himself into the annals of Australian history through his actions and larger-than-life-persona that emerged from them," said Adams.

Library Services Coordinator Rose-marie Walters said this is a great opportunity to hear unique insights on an intriguing chapter of our nation’s history – and one with a local connect.

"Michael Adams’ insights into Kevin John Simmonds illuminate a captivating chapter of Australian lore that continues to intrigue us today. We invite everyone to join us in uncovering this story together," said Ms Walters.

Whether you are a true crime or history enthusiast, can remember the commotion at Kurri Kurri when Simmonds was arrested, or are simply curious about the life of a man who defied the odds, this talk promises to be informative and exhilarating.
