In a bold move to address the growing waste disposal needs of the region, Cessnock City Council is undergoing Stage 1 of the Cessnock Waste Management Landfill Extension Project, with the vital development ensuring that the community has access to reliable, environmentally responsible waste management services for years to come.

With the existing landfill cell nearing its capacity, this new project will expand Cessnock’s waste disposal capabilities by introducing a new landfill cell, offering an additional 20 years of landfilling space. The project also includes significant upgrades to the site, including a new leachate pond, sediment pond, and an access road, transforming a once-degraded former mining and quarrying site into a valuable and productive resource.

Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said the Cessnock Waste Management Landfill Extension Project reflects Council’s commitment to safeguarding the environment and managing waste in a sustainable manner.

“The Cessnock Waste Management Centre has been a cornerstone of responsible waste management in the region since its establishment in the 1970s, and this project is an important step in ensuring Council continues to deliver high-quality waste management services to our community, while addressing future needs in a sustainable way,” said Clr Watton.

“This ambitious project will bring multiple benefits to the region, including the creation of local employment opportunities, the extension of the life of the Cessnock Waste Management Centre, and the transformation of a degraded mining site into a production and environmentally sound asset.”

The construction contract for Stage 1 was awarded to Daracon, a respected contractor known for its expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. The works are projected to be completed by November 2025.
