Cessnock City Council unveils Draft Waste Strategy
Published on 02 April 2025
Cessnock City Council has unveiled its draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026-2031, which is on public exhibition until Friday 2 May 2025, and outlines a comprehensive approach to waste management in the region.
As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, the strategy seeks to reduce landfill waste, enhance recycling, and promote sustainable practices across the community.
Key Takeaways from the draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy
- Weekly Red-Waste and Green-Organics Bin Collection
Council will maintain weekly collection services for red-waste and green-organics bins. This ensures continued convenience for residents and supports efforts to manage waste effectively at the local level.
- Detailed Investigation of Bulk Kerbside Pick-up
Council will conduct a thorough investigation into the potential implementation of a bulk kerbside pick-up service. This service aims to provide residents with an efficient way to dispose of large, bulky items while reducing illegal dumping and encouraging responsible waste disposal.
- Aiming for 80% Waste Diversion from Landfill
A key goal of the draft strategy is to divert 80% of waste from landfill. This ambitious target reflects the Council’s dedication to achieving higher recycling rates and minimising waste sent to landfill, building on the roll out of food organic recycling from 30 June this year.
Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said that Council’s draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy is designed to shape a cleaner, greener future for the community.
"The proposed initiatives reflect Council’s ongoing work to manage waste sustainably, reduce environmental impacts, and encourage responsible practices among residents and businesses," said Clr Watton.
"I encourage residents to share their feedback during the public exhibition period, which will help ensure the final strategy reflects the needs and aspirations of our community."
Residents can review the document by visiting the Together Cessnock website and make an online submission before Friday 2 May 2025. An upcoming pop-up session will also be held at Cessnock Village Shopping Centre on Thursday 10 April between 10.30am-12.30pm.
